Wordle is a no-frills online word game that has set the internet on fire worldwide. The userbase for this game began with only 90 people in November 2021 and reached a mass of 3 lakh players by January 2022. The game is a global five-lettered word puzzle phenomenon that was bought by the New York Times at the beginning of the year. This was initially criticised by players but has created a buzz among players.
What is Wordle?
Table of Contents
Wordle is a daily word game you can find online here. It’s fun, simple and, like a crossword, can only be played once a day. Every 24 hours there’s a new word of the day, and it’s up to you to figure out what it is. The site itself does a fantastic job of explaining the rules:
The game, which started as a tiny project meant for developer Josh Wardle’s friends and family, now boasts approximately 2 million players. But virality hasn’t been easy.
“[‘Wordle’] going viral doesn’t feel great to be honest,” Wardle told the Guardian. “I feel a sense of responsibility for the players. I feel I really owe it to them to keep things running and make sure everything’s working correctly.”
The aim
Your challenge is to guess a five-letter word in six attempts. Each time you guess, you’re told which of your chosen letters are in the target word, and whether they are in the right place. And that’s it.
Where to play
You can play Wordle on the New York Times Games site. There are no apps — so if you see something claiming to be one, it’s a fake.
It was originally hosted on the Wordle website designed by creator Josh Wardle, but moved when the NYT bought Wordle in early February. Some people think that Wordle has got harder since the NYT takeover, but it really hasn’t. It is (currently) still free to play and free of ads, just as it initially was.
When to play
Wordle can only be completed once each day. That’s right — no three-hour time-wasting Wordle sessions while you’re supposed to be working. The game resets at midnight each day, so if you’re really eager you can stay up and complete it while everyone else is asleep.
Wordle Game: How to play
- The game has simple rules in which the players receive five letters each day to guess the letter.
- The color coding provided verifies if the letter is right or wrong.
- If the letter is rightly got at the right place, the box will turn green.
- The correct letter at the wrong place on the box will turn yellow.
- For the letters that are incorrect, the box will turn grey.
- The users will get six tries to solve the five-letter secret word for the day.
- Players share their spoiler-free scores on Twitter after the game is introduced by allowing players to share their results online by mid-December 2021.
- The users can check on Twitter on how many guesses the player has taken of the letter they have got right or wrong.
- The players can access one puzzle a day and wait for the next day to finish the day’s puzzle.
- There is no specified app for the game. Simple word guessing is done through the website.
- You can call your buddy to ping your buddy and discuss the puzzle.
- The terms and letters are hidden in a series of colours like yellow, green, and grey boxes.
Tips and tricks
If you’re a word game purist, you may want to avoid the following tips and rely entirely on your own instincts. For everyone else who’s sick of seeing gray boxes, here are some tips that you may find helpful.
Choosing your first word: The first word is arguably the most important. To maximize the value of your opening gambit, choose a word with three vowels and five different letters. Some examples: orate, media, radio. I always use “adieu” for some reason. It’s a habit and I’m refusing to break it.
I just finished reading a fascinating piece by Tyler Glaiel, a programmer and game designer who tried to figure out the best possible starting word. Apparently we should all be kicking off Wordle with the word “roate.” Honestly, read this whole article, it’s great.
Avoid reusing grays: There’s a keyboard at the bottom of the Wordle board that shows what letters are green, yellow and gray. Avoid reusing letters that have come up gray. Yes, this sounds obvious. But it can take time and effort to think of five-letter words that don’t use letters you’ve already tried. That effort will pay off.
Letters can appear twice: This complicates matters, especially when you’re running out of letters to try on word four or five. But letters often recur, as with words like chill, sissy and ferry having been the correct answers in the past.

Who made Wordle?
Wordle is the work of software engineer Josh Wardle, who originally created the game for his partner, a fan of word games, and tells the BBC it will never become laden with ads. Extremely online people may remember Wardle as the creator of Place, an utterly wild collaborative art project/social experiment that sent the internet into a tizzy in April 2017.
Place was a shared online space that allowed literally anyone to fight over what was drawn there. It resulted in huge, sprawling communities battling over space on this gigantic online canvas.
What are Wordle streaks?
The challenge of solving the day’s puzzle is what brings people to Wordle, but streaks are what keeps them coming back. Wordle keeps track of how many games you’ve played and how many successive victories you’ve had; that’s your streak.
Many people have been playing since January, so it’s not uncommon for people to have streaks of around 100 now. But bear in mind that if you miss a game, your streak will be lost. Plus, your streak is only tracked on one device, ie if you usually play on your phone, then switch to a laptop for a day, your phone streak would be reset and your laptop streak would start at 1. This has caught me out multiple times.
What is Wordle hard mode?
Wordle doesn’t have many features as such, but there is a dark mode — and a hard mode. Hard mode forces you to play any correct letters on subsequent guesses — so if you have a green S at the start, you’d have to keep playing S at the start from then on. And if you have a yellow R in the word, all subsequent guesses would have to include R somewhere too.
What is WordleBot?
WordleBot is a tool made by the NYT, and it’s brilliant. It analyzes each game you play and gives you tips for what you could have done differently and how your game compared to the average. You can access it, for free, on the NYT’s The Upshot site.
Who made Wordle?
Wordle was created by developer Josh Wardle, a guy who you may have come across before; he was also the man behind the Reddit projects The Button and Place, each of which were similarly brilliant — and brilliantly simple — experiments in internet behavior.
When did Wordle start?
Wardle created Wordle back in 2013 but the project lay dormant until lockdown, when he resurrected it for his puzzle-loving partner. It was released into the wild in October 2021, but soared in popularity in January 2022.
