When Does Snow Form?
Table of Contents
When microscopic ice crystals in clouds bind together to create snowflakes, the result is snow. If enough crystals become entangled, they will grow heavy enough to tumble to the earth. Snowflakes falling in wet air slightly warmer than 0 °C melt at the edges and adhere together to form large flakes.
What phase is snow forming?
Deposition occurs when water vapour transforms straight to ice without first becoming a liquid. Ice crystals form when temperatures below 32°F are present at higher altitudes in the atmosphere.
What temp is too cold to snow?
Once the air temperature at ground level drops below about -10 degrees Fahrenheit (-20 degrees Celsius), snowfall becomes unlikely in most places.
